As a side note: I installed the idle speed control valve on the other car (560 SEC) and it raised the idle from 1000 rpm to 1250 rpm. So it appears the ICV was a partial cause, but it didn't really help any on the problem vehicle (560 SEL).
Mercedes -Benz offered the first cruise control system that self adjusted to maintain a constant speed regardless of incline or decline in the road surface. Two-way powered, dual stage heated rear "Chesterfield" bench seat (pre-1990 SEL) with four-way manually adjustable rear headrests standard on the 500 and 560 SEL models.
The 560 SEC is far and away the best MB had to offer then. My car new was over 85 grand. I picked mine up for 5 grand and then put another 19 grand into it restoring it to near showroom. Parts are not cheap and neither is a good mechanic but are well worth it. The thing you will need to be careful about is speeding.
A quick clarification for everybody: when he says " I had my 560 SEC up to 120 mph and it was as smooth as a high speed train", he is referring to his first C126: a 560SEC, very well sorted out to begin with. Unfortunately he had to sell that car, later he bought a Gen1 car, which is the one with the issues.
From top to bottom: Trooper6 (Mike's) 560 SEC. He has a stock suspension and stock wheels and tires. Ride is is appropriate for a stock setup. He has 16" 15 hole wheels and is rolling on 205's. Next car down is Mapearso's (Mark's) 560 SEC. He has H&R springs sitting on Bilstein HD's with a 1 1/2" drop.
The w126 560SEC can be had with 2.47 ASR, 2.47 LSD, and 2.47 open. The LSD will have clutches. Here is an internal shot of my 2.47 LSD. Notice the clutches on right side of the spider gear in the carrier. Exterior wise, it should have a tag stating "Achtung: Spezial-Ol Sperrdifferential".

Mercedes-Benz's new V-6 version of the S-class, the S450, makes us wonder why you wouldn't just choose the V-8. Standing ¼-mile: 13.8 sec @ 103 mph / 13.9 sec @ 103 mph Top speed (governor
